Miscellany
What I've been listening to lately
Belly Star (1993) - When it first came out, this was probably my
favorite CD in the world. I wanted to be Tanya Donnelly for a while, or
at least to have her voice. I've been listening to this in the car, and I'm still
finding new thinngs buried in the lyrics.
Jennifer Trynin Cockamamie (1994) - Angry aggressive girl music? Sure.
I like women who rock. Plus, "Happier" keeps talking about Store 24.
REM (every album ever) - This is one of those things that seems like a good
idea when you start, and then it's a week later and you've been listening to Fables
of the Reconstruction on repeat for six hours, and dammit, it just feels right.
The New Pornographers Mass Romantic (2000) - Is it pop? Yeah. Is it
catchy? Hell yeah. Is it turn up the car stereo, roll down the windows, and do 80
down the highway rocking out and feeling great? Well, that's how I spent my weekend.
Slainte Mhath Va (2002) - Rhia introduced me to this one, which is sort of,
I guess, modern Celtic music, and the kind of thing that makes my mom think "What the hell
is she listening to? Bagpipes?" I think it's perfect summer-afternoon music.
Liz Phair Exile in Guyville (1993) - Everybody has this in their collection.
Right? It's supposed to be one of the best rock albums ever. I haven't heard every rock
album ever. But I like it.
Kathleen Edwards Failer (2002) - Hey, is this another cranky/sad/disappointed/angry
female thing? Girl voice. Guitar. Songs about drinking too much and not being happy where you
are. Sometimes I just want to crawl into 12 Bellevue and stay there. When it first came out,
I wondered if this album would be what would save me in the end.
Air America radio - Streamed online,
left-wing talk radio. I find it comforting, and begin to understand how some people
find Rush and Sean so listenable.
